The HelloNet campaign is an active APT operation targeting large Russian organizations through the ViPNet secure networking software suite. Attackers achieve persistence by placing a malicious wtsapi32.dll in the ViPNet Update System directory, which is sideloaded by itcsrvup64.exe at OS startup. The loader (HelloInjector) injects into svchost.exe and deploys a modular toolkit including a network proxy, command executor, log cleaner, and a Rust-based backdoor. The campaign uses renamed PuTTY/Plink utilities for SSH reverse tunneling to C2 servers and employs IOCTL hooking to evade user-mode security solutions.

HelloNet campaign — new malicious modules launched through the ViPNet update system June 2026 Dark Web Threat Actor Trend Report The June 2026 Dark Web Threat Actor Trend Report from AhnLab ASEC summarizes broad activity across hacktivist, APT, and cybercrime ecosystems. Key developments include ShinyHunters' migration to dark web infrastructure, North Korean supply chain attacks on npm AI-framework packages via Sapphire Sleet, a RaaS group's EDR-killing toolkit targeting European defense/aerospace, and TA569's Web Inject framework leveraging fake browser updates. Law enforcement achieved notable wins including a Scattered Spider conviction and multiple arrests across Europe.
Gamaredon in 2025: Leveraging tunnels, workers, dead drops, and new alliances Gamaredon, a Russia-aligned APT group attributed to the FSB, maintained high operational tempo throughout 2025 with 35 spearphishing campaigns exclusively targeting Ukrainian government and military institutions. The group introduced six new PowerShell tools, resurrected the PteroSetup VBScript weaponizer for lateral movement, and began abusing CVE-2025-8088 (WinRAR) for persistence via the Startup folder. A significant infrastructure evolution occurred: C&C servers are now hidden behind tunnel services (Cloudflare tunnels, Cloudflare workers, Microsoft devtunnels, Loophole) and dead-drop resolutions on legitimate platforms (Telegram, Telegra.ph, Rentry, GoFile, Dropbox, and others), while stolen data is exfiltrated to S3-compatible cloud storage (Wasabi, Tebi, Intercolo) rather than attacker-owned servers.
FishMonger’s arsenal upgraded: SprySOCKS for Windows ESET researchers discovered two undocumented Windows variants of the SprySOCKS backdoor, WINDRV and WINPLUS, attributed to the China-aligned FishMonger APT. These variants utilize advanced stealth techniques, including a custom kernel driver for hiding artifacts and diverting TCP traffic, as well as print processor abuse for persistence.
ESET APT Activity Report Q4 2025–Q1 2026 ESET's Q4 2025–Q1 2026 APT Activity Report highlights global espionage and destructive campaigns by state-aligned actors. Notable incidents include a major supply chain compromise of the 'axios' npm library by Lazarus, destructive wiper attacks on Polish critical infrastructure by Sandworm, and the deployment of new edge-device implants like PhiliKit against Ivanti VPNs by China-aligned groups.
GopherWhisper: A burrow full of malware ESET researchers uncovered GopherWhisper, a previously undocumented China-aligned APT group targeting a Mongolian governmental entity. The group utilizes a diverse arsenal of custom, primarily Go-based malware that leverages legitimate services like Slack, Discord, and Microsoft Outlook for command and control, blending malicious traffic with normal enterprise communications.
NCSC warns of messaging app targeting The NCSC and international partners have issued an alert regarding increased targeting of high-risk individuals by state-sponsored threat actors via messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal. Attackers utilize social engineering, phishing links, and malicious QR codes to steal account recovery codes, link unauthorized devices, and intercept sensitive communications.
Suspected China-Based Espionage Operation Against Military Targets in Southeast Asia A suspected China-nexus threat actor tracked as CL-STA-1087 has been conducting a persistent espionage campaign against Southeast Asian military targets since 2020. The attackers utilize custom malware, including the AppleChris and MemFun backdoors, leveraging Dead Drop Resolvers (DDR) like Pastebin and Dropbox for C2 resolution alongside advanced evasion techniques like process hollowing and DLL hijacking.
